Dark Tales - Edgar Allan Poe's the Black Cat
In Dark Tales you go on an adventure with Inspector Dupin!
This is a hidden-object adventure game with a plot inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story. Just like in the previous title of the Dark Tales series, the game puts you in the role of detective Dupin's friend, now investigating the disappearance of Sara Davies.
You and Dupin decide to visit Monsieur Davies' mansion to have a look around and see if there is any evidence that can help you find the truth, while a black cat seems to guide you along the way. Getting access to the mansion won't be an easy task, and Monsieur Davies doesn't seem very willing to help. As in most games of the genre, the main obstacle you face is that nearly all rooms in the mansion are locked. So you start an object hunt through the different rooms trying to get keys and items to open up new explorable areas, and completing hidden-object scenes. Sometimes you will need to combine objects in your inventory to create new tools and figure out how to use them to solve a puzzle. Hidden-object scenes are gorgeous and present the usual list of objects with rechargeable hints that you can use to locate items faster. Mini games are also present, often consisting of logic puzzles that you will need to solve to unlock door mechanisms.
As far as visuals go, developers have done a great job of recreating this dark and tragic story. Locations are detailed and nicely designed, and music really helps to add suspense. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that you need to walk back to revisit scenes very often, and that can be a bit tiresome. Apart from that, overall gameplay is satisfying and the story is sure to appeal to those who enjoy horror/suspense stories.
